Laser cutting

Our CO2 and fibre, pipe and profile laser cutting systems are capable of working well on a wide range of formats, without compromising on the robustness or quality of the cutting process. We offer LT7, LT8.10 and LT24 laser cutting services.

We can freely choose between CO2 laser cutting technology and fibre laser cutting technology based on the type of product we want to achieve.With fibre laser cutting we are able to cut materials such as copper and brass as well as every aluminium alloy and, above all, we can achieve very high cutting speeds on thin carbon steel and stainless steel thicknesses.CO2 laser cutting is a valid alternative that we can consider, in particular, for the cutting of thick pipes of mild steel cut in oxygen.

Automatic drilling with high added value:

If you have to make holes after the cut, instead of moving the pieces to another machine (for example a radial or column drill), with all the possible errors that derive from it and the inevitable loss of time, STL srl has a fully automatic radial drilling unit up to an M16 size.

3D cutting: advantages especially during the welding phase

The cutting head can work both perpendicular and inclined, with respect to the surface of the tube. In the second case, it is the so-called 3D cutting, with which STL srl carries out caulking and semi-caulking operations that are highly advantageous for the pieces that they will then have to weld.
Indeed, the laser already cuts at the beginning with a high geometric precision and no sanding of the surfaces to be welded is required.

Each type of pipe provides the best possible conditions of productivity and reliability for the cutting process. Thanks to the intermediate supports with specific shapes that automatically adjust themselves according to the pipe to be cut, the light and flexible pipes provide an additional guide and lateral containment that is highly effective during the fast and sudden rotations. The heavy and rigid pipes, on the other hand, will have total freedom of movement on the sliding steel rollers to compensate for any distortion of the pipes.

The mechanical rigidity of the entire plant allows high accelerations to be maintained in all conditions without compromising the precision of the machining operations.

The latest generation CNC management system interfaces in real time to the conditions of the bar being machined, based on straightness, torsion and thickness, as well as the type of metal.

State-of-the-art support devices on the workpiece feeding and unloading line constantly accompany the movement of the pipe, reducing the axial deformation of the pipes and helping to maintain precise machining.

For pipes affected by form errors and/or which are not easily mechanically “guided” due to their high thickness, additional solutions are available for measurement and compensation of errors.

The LT8.10 is the automatic system suitable not only for tubular machining, but also for machining standard and non-standard open profiles, even in the case of poor surface quality.

The laser cut applied to the cutting of tubular profiles of high thickness and size offers countless advantages in terms of piece cost and the quality of the result with respect to other technologies (plasma, oxygen cutting).

The laser performs the required machining operations with a precision already compatible with the required tolerances; there is therefore no need for subsequent adjustments with abrasive tools.
The thermally altered areas of the machined edges, which are thus ready for welding, do not affect the mechanical properties of the machined parts.

With a single laser cutting operation, “n” traditional operations are replaced. The cutting head can work both perpendicular and inclined, with respect to the surface of the pipe. In the second case it is the so-called 3D cut or BEVEL cut, with which it is possible to carry out caulking and semi-caulking processes, which are of great benefit for the pieces to be welded. The laser cuts with a high geometric precision and does not require the need to grind the surfaces to be welded.

Throughout the process (loading, cutting and unloading), the bars and profiles loaded into the machine are always supported and transferred from one support surface to another. In this way, deformation is limited, but above all, the cut piece is guaranteed to reach its destination without sudden falls that could compromise its integrity and/or cause damage to the piece itself.

The largest and thickest pipes traditionally have static or profile deformations already coming from the production process.

A RENISHAW mechanical feeler gauge measures the profile, detects centring and torsion errors and allows the machine to compensate and modify cutting paths on the fly to obtain precise geometries as per the design and programming.
